Workflow Evaluation – ESRI

Client: ESRI, Redlands CA

Project name: Verify and Validate Trimble DSS Workflow in ArcGIS

Description: The purpose of this project was to perform an independent evaluation of ArcGIS for on-the-fly processing and serving of Trimble DSS airborne raster imagery.  The investigation covered both the workflow efficiency and the geometric accuracy of the end ortho products, with the goal of establishing ArcGIS as a viable tool for orthophoto map production.

Services Provided: Workflow development, data set validation, SW verification testing, accuracy validation

Solution: Applanix Corporation, the manufacturer of the DSS, supplied several data sets acquired over a geometric test range north of Toronto. The data sets comprised imagery, Exterior Orientation and camera models. A workflow was established and tested for the DSS in ArcGIS, and subsequently used to generate orthophoto products using different sources and accuracies of DEM’s. The orthophoto products were then evaluated against surveyed Ground Control Points (GCP’s) and densified GCP’s extracted from the DSS stereo imagery, and the results summarized in a report and presented to the customer.

Technology Deployed: ESRI ArcGIS Desktop 10.0, ArcGIS Server 10.0

Results: The analysis showed that the ArcGIS on-the-fly ortho processing of the Trimble DSS raster imagery was accurate and consistent with industry standards

Results of this project were presented at the USGS JACIE Workshop, March 29 – 31, 2011 http://calval.cr.usgs.gov/JACIE_files/JACIE11/Presentations/ThurAM/920_Kinn_JACIE_11.065.pdf
